Leaking or perished washing machine inlet hose?

The inlet hose carries mains water from the tap to the inlet valve, and it stays under pressure whenever the tap is on. Rubber ages, so an old hose can crack, swell or weep at the crimped ends, and a burst can flood a laundry in minutes. Look for a bulge along the hose, dampness at either connection or water marks on the floor behind the machine. Hoses are cheap compared with water damage, so replace one at the first sign of wear, and turn the tap off if the house will be empty for long.

Connecting the new inlet hose

Turn the tap off and unplug the machine, then disconnect the old hose and catch the water left in it with a bucket. Check that the new hose has its rubber washers seated in both ends. Screw the fittings on by hand until snug, without cross threading, and keep the hose free of kinks and sharp bends. Turn the tap on slowly and check both ends for drips before running a load.
