Door shelves carry a surprising amount of weight, from milk and juice to sauces and jars, and every swing of the door puts load on their mounting points. Over time the plastic can split along the front lip, crack at the tabs or break away completely, especially if the door is slammed or the shelf is overloaded. A damaged shelf may drop out when the door opens, which can send jars onto the floor.

Fitting the door shelf
Most door shelves lift up and out of moulded supports on the door liner. Empty the old one, lift it clear and lower the new shelf onto the same supports until it seats fully. Check it's secure before loading it again, and spread heavy bottles along its length rather than at one end.
