Older F&P fridge running warm or not switching off?

This mechanical thermostat uses a gas-filled capillary tube to sense the temperature inside the fridge and opens or closes a switch to run the compressor. With age the contacts burn or the capillary loses its charge. The fridge then runs warm, cycles erratically, never switches off and freezes everything, or won't start at all even though the light comes on. Turning the dial without hearing a click is another hint. Before ordering, make sure the compressor and its starting relay aren't the real fault.

Replacing the thermostat

Unplug the fridge at the wall. Remove the dial and thermostat housing, then carefully withdraw the capillary tube, noting exactly where and how far it was clipped or inserted. Move the wires across one at a time. Route the new capillary in the same position without kinking it, refit the housing and give the fridge 24 hours to settle before adjusting the dial.
