Frost-free fridges cool by blowing air over a cold evaporator, and the defrost heater switches on at intervals to melt the frost that builds up on it. Once the heater fails, ice keeps building until it blocks the airflow. The freezer may still feel cold while the fridge section warms up, and you might see a thick white layer of ice behind the freezer's back panel, water leaking as ice melts, or hear a fan scraping on ice.

Fitting the defrost heater
Unplug the fridge and empty the freezer before you start. Let any ice on the evaporator melt fully rather than chipping at it, as a punctured evaporator is an expensive mistake. Note how the old heater is clipped and wired, fit the new one in the same position, and refit all covers before plugging back in. A repairer is the best choice if you are unsure.
