Replacing a cracked or lost freezer ice tray

The ice tray sits in its own spot in the freezer and holds water while it freezes into cubes. Plastic trays become brittle in the cold, so they often crack when twisted to release the cubes or when dropped. A cracked tray leaks water across the freezer floor, where it freezes into a sheet of ice that can jam drawers or block vents. Trays also go missing when fridges are moved or handed down. Using the tray made for these freezers means it sits level and stays put.

Using the new ice tray

Wash the tray in warm soapy water before first use. Fill it to any marked fill line, or just below the top of the cups, so the cubes don't freeze together, and keep it level as you slide it into place. To release the cubes, let the tray sit for a moment at room temperature rather than bending it hard, which helps it last.
