The drum shaft runs through two bearings pressed into the rear of the tub, with a seal in front to keep water out. When the seal starts to leak, water washes the grease out and the bearings rust and wear. The first sign is usually a rumble or roar that gets louder as the spin speeds up. Later you may feel play when you lift the drum at the front edge, see rust streaks from the back of the tub, or hear grinding. Left too long, worn bearings can damage the shaft and tub.

Planning a bearing replacement

Bearing replacement is a major job. Unplug the machine and turn off the water, then the tub has to be removed and split to reach the bearings, so check that your tub can be separated before buying. Replace both bearings and the shaft seal together, and inspect the shaft for wear where the seal runs. Press bearings in evenly on the outer race, never by hitting the inner race.
