Gas burner clicking but not lighting
The spark electrode is the small ceramic plug that sits beside the burner. When you push and turn the knob, the ignition module sends a high voltage pulse down the lead and the electrode sparks across to the burner, lighting the gas. A cracked ceramic, a corroded tip or a damaged lead lets the spark leak away to the wrong place. You'll see a weak or missing spark at one burner, hear clicking with no flame, or notice sparking under the cooktop instead of at the burner. A burner that will only light with a match is a classic sign.

Fitting the spark electrode
Turn the cooktop off at the wall and shut the gas off at the isolation valve before starting. In Australia, work on gas appliances should be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. The lead runs from the burner to the ignition module under the cooktop, so note its route and keep it clear of hot surfaces and sharp edges. Check each burner lights cleanly once everything is back together.
