Part 8583056140723 is the genuine ceramic hob top for the Westinghouse WHC642BC ceramic cooktop. It is the glass ceramic surface that the radiant zones heat through. If your cooktop glass has cracked, chipped or crazed, the top needs replacing before the cooktop is used again. Check that your rating plate shows WHC642BC, as other Westinghouse ceramic cooktops use different tops.
Cracked ceramic cooktop glass, why it must be replaced
The ceramic top is both the cooking surface and the barrier between your pans and live heating elements. A crack, even a fine one, can let liquid spill onto the elements and wiring below, which risks electric shock and further damage. Chips at the edge can spread under heat. Other signs the top has had its day include pitting, deep scratches that catch pans, and a top that has lifted from its frame or seal. Stop using the cooktop and switch it off at the isolator until the new top is fitted.

Fitting must be done by a licensed electrician
Ceramic cooktops are hard-wired, so isolate power at the switchboard and have a licensed electrician fit the new top. The cooktop will need to come out of the benchtop. If elements or sensors have to be moved across, handle them carefully and keep their wiring in the original routes. Replace the bench seal if it is damaged and test each zone before use.
