Gas burner lighting poorly or flaming unevenly?
The burner crown spreads the gas into an even ring of flames, and the cap sits on top to shape them and shield the ports. Boil-overs, grease and cleaning products can clog the small ports, and years of heat can warp, crack or corrode the metal. Common signs are flames that are yellow, lazy or missing in sections, a burner that is slow to light or lights with a pop, flames lifting off the ports, or a cap that won't sit flat. A distorted crown can also stop the flame reaching the igniter or the safety probe, so the burner keeps going out.

Fitting the crown and cap
Make sure the burners are off and completely cool. Lift off the old cap and crown and brush around the burner cup, electrode and safety probe with a dry brush. Seat the new crown so its locating lugs or notch line up with the base, then sit the cap squarely on top. Light the burner and check for an even blue flame all the way round. Any work beyond these removable parts should be left to a licensed gas fitter.
