The idler pulley sits on a spring-loaded arm near the motor and keeps the drum belt under steady tension, so the belt grips the motor pulley without slipping. Its bearing or bush works hard and runs warm, and over time it dries out. A worn idler squeals or squeaks as the drum turns, may thump or wobble, and can let the belt slip or jump off, leaving a drum that won't turn even though the motor runs. A pulley that feels rough, tight or loose on its spindle when spun by hand is due for replacement.

Replacing the idler pulley
Unplug the dryer before opening it. Depending on the model, the idler is reached by removing the front or back panel. Take a photo of the belt path around the idler and motor pulley before releasing the tension. Fit the new pulley to the arm, re-route the belt exactly as it was, and spin the drum by hand to check everything runs smoothly and quietly.
