Simpson top loader not washing properly? Check the agitator
The agitator is the tall centre post that twists back and forth to roll the clothes through the water. It sits on a splined shaft from the gearbox, and if the splines inside the agitator wear, the shaft turns but the agitator barely moves. You may also find cracked fins snagging clothes, washing that comes out still dirty, a clicking or grinding noise during the wash, or an agitator that wobbles or lifts off too easily. Look closely at the base, as cracks often start there.

Changing the agitator
Unplug the machine first. Remove the cap at the top of the agitator to reach the bolt or retaining fixing that holds it on the shaft. Older agitators can stick tight with detergent build-up, so a firm straight pull works better than levering against the bowl. Clean the drive shaft and splines, fit the new agitator so it seats fully, then tighten the fixing and run a short wash.
