An infinite heat switch, also called an energy regulator or simmerstat, sets the heat on a hotplate by switching it on and off in cycles. Low settings give short bursts of power, while high settings keep it on almost constantly. When the internal bimetal or contacts wear out, the plate may stay flat out on every setting, refuse to heat at all, or click on and off erratically. Burnt or loose terminals at the back are also common. If the indicator light behaves oddly, the pilot contact in the same switch may have failed. A licensed electrician can test the switch and element to find which one is at fault.
