Signs the dishwasher heating element has failed

In these dishwashers the element sits in line with the water flow, inside a tube that the wash water is pumped through, rather than lying exposed in the bottom of the tub. It heats the water for washing and rinsing. When it fails, the cycle may run much longer as the machine waits for heat that never arrives, dishes come out cold with a greasy film, detergent doesn't dissolve properly and drying is poor. A shorted element can also trip the safety switch. Test it for continuity and insulation before replacing it.

Replacing the in-line element
