Oven grill not heating? Signs the top element has gone
Mounted in the roof of the main oven, this element does the grilling and supplies top heat for browning. It often works with the bottom element in conventional bake modes too. A failed grill element shows up as a grill that stays dark and cold, cheese that won't melt, and bakes that are cooked through but pale on top. Many failures leave a visible mark, such as a blistered patch, a crack or a section that has sagged. If the safety switch trips as soon as the grill is turned on, the element may be shorting to earth.

Fitting the grill element
Switch off at the isolator or switchboard and let the oven cool. Take out the racks, undo the screws holding the element to the cavity and, from the rear, disconnect the terminals, noting which wire goes where. Fit the new element, make sure it sits clear of the cavity roof and any shields, and reconnect the wires firmly. A hard-wired oven needs a licensed electrician to reconnect it.
