Oven not heating from the bottom

In conventional bake the lower element does most of the work, heating the oven floor so warm air rises through the cavity. When it fails, the grill and fan bake may still work, but conventional bake barely warms up, cakes come out pale underneath and pastry bases stay soggy. Look for a split, blister or burnt spot on the element sheath. The safety switch tripping as soon as bake is selected can also point to a shorted element. A continuity test across the terminals settles it.

Replacing the bottom element

Switch the oven off at the isolator or switchboard and let it cool fully. Remove the racks and, where fitted, the oven floor panel. The element terminals are generally at the back, so the oven or cooker may need to be pulled forward for access. Photograph the wiring before disconnecting it. If the appliance is hard-wired, have a licensed electrician do the job or reconnect it.
