Oven grill not heating? Signs of a failed top element
The top element sits in the roof of the oven and glows red to grill and brown food from above. On many ovens it also adds top heat in some of the cooking functions. Elements usually fail when the internal coil burns through, and you may spot a blister, split or burn mark on the sheath. Signs include a grill that stays cold, food that won't brown on top, or the safety switch tripping when the grill is turned on. A multimeter reading far from about 38 ohms points to a faulty element.

Fitting the grill element
Switch the oven off at the wall or isolate the circuit, as many ovens are hard-wired, and use a licensed electrician if yours is. Let the oven cool, undo the screws holding the element and ease it out just far enough to reach the terminals. Photograph the wire positions, move them to the new element and check each terminal is tight before restoring power.
