What the flame sensor does in a gas oven
The flame sensor sits in the flame of the oven burner and tells the safety system that the burner is alight. While it senses flame, gas keeps flowing. If the flame goes out, the signal drops and the gas is shut off, which stops raw gas filling the oven. When the sensor tip is coated, cracked or knocked out of position, it can't pick up the flame reliably. The usual symptoms are a burner that lights but won't stay lit, an oven that cuts out partway through cooking, or one that refuses to light at all.

Fitting the flame sensor
This is a gas safety component, so Australian rules require a licensed gas fitter to install it. Turn off the gas and isolate the power first. The sensor tip needs to sit exactly where the old one did in relation to the burner flame, so note its position and bracket before removing it. After fitting, the gas fitter will light the burner and check the oven stays alight.
