Product details
Frost building up on the back wall of a Fisher & Paykel freezer often points to the defrost heater, and this genuine kit, part 821727P, is the replacement listed for a long run of models. It is rated at 230V, measures 420mm and is linked to the numbers 820694P and 818971P. Models on file include E402B and E411T fridges, along with E372B and E381T units, E331T and E415H models, and the RF331TCLW1, RF331TCRW1 and RF381TCRW1.
Freezer icing up or fridge getting warm? Check the defrost heater
Frost-free fridges cool by blowing air over an evaporator coil hidden behind the freezer panel. Moisture from the air freezes onto that coil, so the control regularly switches on the defrost heater to melt it away, and the water drains out. If the heater fails, the ice keeps building until air can no longer get through. The freezer may still feel cold at first, but the fridge section warms up, a thick layer of frost forms on the freezer back panel, and you might hear the fan scraping ice or find water leaking. A failed defrost sensor or control can cause the same symptoms.

Fitting the defrost heater
Switch off at the wall and unplug the fridge, then move the food to an esky or another freezer. Let all the ice melt before you start, as forcing it can damage the evaporator. Remove the panel at the back of the freezer, note how the heater is clipped to the coil and photograph the connection. The plug is not part of this kit, so reuse your old one if it is sound. Restore power and check the freezer pulls down to temperature.
Questions about this part
Does the kit come with the plug?
No. The 838586 plug is no longer supplied with this kit. It can be ordered separately if your old plug is damaged or corroded, so check the connection on your existing heater before ordering to know whether you need both.
