Product details
Ice building up on the back panel and a fridge that's slowly losing its cool can both point to a failed defrost heater. Part 820670P is the genuine Fisher & Paykel defrost element, also listed as 819088P, for the E210L, RF210L, RF210R and RF210F fridges.
Frost build-up in your Fisher & Paykel fridge
Frost-free fridges collect frost on the evaporator coil as they cool. At set intervals the defrost heater switches on and melts it away, and the water drains out to the evaporating tray. If the heater burns out, frost keeps growing until it chokes the coil and blocks the air flow. The freezer may stay cold at first while the fresh food section warms, then both lose temperature. You might also hear the fan scraping ice or see water leaking when the build-up eventually melts.

Replacing the defrost heater
Unplug the fridge, move the food into an esky and let the ice on the evaporator melt fully, using towels to catch the water. Remove the evaporator cover, photograph the heater's position and wiring, then fit the new one in the same place. Before closing up, check the defrost thermostat and drain, as these often fail or block at the same time.
Questions about this part
How do I know the heater has failed?
With the fridge unplugged, a technician can check the heater for continuity with a multimeter. No reading means it has failed. Heavy, even frost across the whole evaporator coil is a typical sign as well.
