Burner clicking but won't light?
A spark plug turns the high voltage pulse from the ignition module into a spark at the burner. It's a metal electrode set in a porcelain insulator, with the lead running back under the cooktop. Heat, spills and cleaning take their toll over the years. Signs it needs replacing include steady clicking with no flame on one burner, a spark you can see jumping somewhere other than the burner, a cracked porcelain body, or a lead with damaged insulation. If every burner has stopped sparking, the ignition module or switches are more likely.

Fitting the spark plug
Shut off the gas and switch the cooker off at the wall before lifting the cooktop. Trace the old lead back to the spark generator and note its route and any clips, because the new 870mm lead should follow the same path away from heat. Gas appliance work in Australia must be done by a licensed gas fitter. Check every burner lights cleanly once the job's done.
