Product details

Smeg part 810930121 is a genuine ignition spark plug, the ceramic electrode beside a gas burner that throws the spark to light it. It's wired back to the spark generator under the cooktop. Smeg uses different spark plugs for different burners and lead lengths, so match 810930121 against the plug you're replacing or the parts list for your model. Gas work should be done by a licensed gas fitter.

Smeg gas burner clicking but not lighting

Turning or pressing a burner knob tells the spark generator to send high voltage pulses down the lead to the spark plug, which arcs across to the burner and ignites the gas. A cracked ceramic body lets the spark track to earth somewhere else, so you hear clicking but see no spark at the burner. Grease, spilled food and moisture cause the same symptom. Other signs are a weak or intermittent spark, one burner failing while the rest work, or ignition that keeps clicking after the flame is lit. Clean and dry the plug and burner first, then inspect it for cracks.

Replacing the spark plug

Turn off the gas supply and isolate the power at the wall before starting. Remove the trivets and burner caps, then the cooktop top to reach the plug. Trace the lead back to the spark generator and note its terminal. Fit the new plug in the same position with the correct gap to the burner. Under Australian rules gas appliance work should be carried out by a licensed gas fitter.

Questions about this part

Do I need to replace all the spark plugs?

Not usually. Only the burner that won't spark needs a new plug. If several burners have the same fault, the spark generator or a shared wiring problem may be the cause, so get that checked first.
