The upper spray arm spins on water pressure, firing jets up through the top basket. If it cracks, warps or its jets block with food or scale, it slows down or stops turning. Glasses and cups on the top rack then come out with food residue, spots or a gritty film while the bottom rack looks fine. A broken arm can also rattle or catch on the basket. Try cleaning the jets with a toothpick and rinsing the arm first. If it's cracked, the hub is worn or it still won't spin freely, a new arm is the answer.

Fitting the spray arm
Turn the dishwasher off at the wall. Slide out the upper basket and remove the old arm, which usually unscrews or unclips from its hub under the rack. Check the water feed tube and hub for blockages while it's off. Fit the new arm, spin it by hand to make sure it clears the basket and anything below it, then run a rinse cycle.
