It fits on the back end of the rack rail and acts as a stop for the basket wheels. Check your dishwasher's model, or the number on a surviving cap, before ordering.
Dishwasher basket rolling off its rail?
The rack runs in and out on rails or runners along the sides of the tub. The rear cap closes off the back end of each rail so the wheels have something to stop against when the basket is pushed home. When a cap cracks, perishes or falls off, the basket can roll too far back, drop off the rail, sit crooked, or block the door from closing properly. Bits of broken cap can also end up in the filter. Replacing the caps is a small job that brings back a basket that glides and stops where it should.

Fitting the rear rail cap
Turn the dishwasher off at the wall before reaching inside. Pull the basket out and lift it off the rails. Remove what's left of the old cap and clean the end of the rail. Press the new cap firmly onto the rail end until it sits fully home, then refit the basket and roll it in and out a few times to check it stops cleanly.
