Washing machine leaking from the door? Check the seal

The door seal folds between the drum opening and the cabinet, flexing every time the drum moves on its suspension. Over the years it can tear at the bottom fold, get punctured by coins, underwire or keys, or harden and split. Black mould in the folds is common too. A damaged seal shows up as water on the floor at the front of the machine, often during the wash or the start of a spin, and sometimes a musty smell from the drum. Wiping the seal dry after washing helps it last.

Changing a washer door boot

Unplug the machine and turn off the taps. The outer clamp ring is usually released first, then the front panel or door lock may need to come off to reach the inner clamp. Note the alignment marks on the seal and drum so any drain holes end up at the bottom. Seat the seal evenly all the way round, refit both clamps and run a rinse to check for leaks.
