Smeg dishwasher leaving the bottom rack dirty?

Water is pumped up into the lower arm and forced out through angled jets, which spin the arm and spray the lower basket from underneath. A crack anywhere along the arm lets water leak out with no force behind it, so the arm slows or stops spinning. Blocked jets, a damaged hub or an arm that catches on a tall plate or the basket frame have the same effect. Pots, plates and cutlery on the bottom rack come out dirty or gritty while the upper rack still cleans properly.

Changing the lower arm

Turn the dishwasher off at the wall and pull out the bottom basket. Depending on the model, the arm lifts off its hub or is held by a nut or clip, so note how yours comes off. Clean the filter and sump while you have access, then fit the new arm and turn it by hand to make sure it clears the basket and spins freely.
