Smeg cooktop knob slipping or broken?
Each knob sits on the spindle of a gas valve and lets you push, turn and light the burner, then set the flame. Heat rising off the burners and years of turning take their toll, so the knob's grip on the spindle loosens or the body splits. You might notice it spinning freely, pulling off while the burner is still lit, or needing a hard push before the valve will turn. A worn knob is also a safety concern, because it becomes hard to tell whether the burner is fully off.

How to fit a cooktop knob
Make sure every burner is off and the cooktop has cooled. Pull the damaged knob straight up off the valve spindle. Line the new knob up with the spindle shape and press it down firmly until it seats. Push and turn it to check the burner lights and the knob returns cleanly to off. If a valve feels stiff or you can smell gas, stop and call a licensed gas fitter.
