Smeg oven knob cracked, loose or spinning?
Control knobs take daily twisting and plenty of heat from the cooktop and oven door, so the plastic boss inside eventually cracks or the shaped hole that grips the spindle wears round. When that happens the knob slips, spins without turning the control, or comes off in your hand. Markings can also fade until you can't tell which setting is selected. Replacing a worn knob is quick and stops people grabbing the bare spindle with pliers, which can damage the gas valve or switch behind it.

Fitting the knob
Turn the control to off and make sure the oven and cooktop are cool. Pull the old knob straight off the spindle without twisting, as levering it sideways can bend the shaft. Line up the hole in the new knob with the profile of the spindle and push it home until it sits snugly against the panel. Check it points to off and moves through each setting smoothly.
