Uneven flames on a wok burner
The outer cap sits on top of the outer burner ring and spreads the gas evenly to the flame ports around its edge. If it's warped, cracked, chipped or not seated properly, the flame can lift, burn yellow, flicker unevenly or fail to light all the way around. A damaged cap can also make the burner harder to ignite. Caps wear over time from heat and cleaning, and ones that have been dropped or put through a dishwasher often don't sit flat any more.

Seating the cap correctly
Make sure all burners are off and the cooktop has cooled down. Lift off the old cap and clean the burner head and flame ports with a soft brush. Lower the new outer cap into place so it sits flat and centred, then light the burner and check for a steady blue flame all the way around. If the flame stays uneven, have a licensed gas fitter check the burner.
