Dishwasher only washing one basket? The diverter may be stuck

Many BSH dishwashers save water and power by washing one level at a time. The water switch motor turns a disc inside the diverter valve, which directs water to the lower arm, the upper arm or both, depending on the program stage. If the motor stops or the disc jams, the machine gets stuck on one arm. Typical signs are a clean bottom basket with a dirty top one, or the reverse, a spray arm that never turns, or an error code linked to the water switch. Food debris lodged in the valve is a common cause.

Fitting the diverter valve

Unplug the dishwasher or turn it off at the wall, and shut the tap. Sponge out the sump, then slide the machine out and tip it back or remove the base panel to reach the valve. Photograph the hoses and the motor plug first. Use new clamps if the old ones are tired, and run a test cycle, watching for leaks and checking both spray arms turn.
