Noisy or damaged air conditioner outdoor fan
The outdoor fan moves air across the condenser coil so the system can shed heat in cooling mode or pick it up in heating mode. A cracked, chipped or warped blade throws the fan out of balance, causing vibration, rattling and extra wear on the fan motor bearings. If the fan can't move enough air, the system works harder, may trip on high pressure and cools or heats poorly. Blades get damaged by hail, debris blown into the unit, ice build-up or a loose fixing nut.

Replacing the outdoor fan
Turn the system off and isolate it at the outdoor isolator switch before removing the fan grille. Note how the fan seats on the motor shaft and which way it faces. Undo the fixing nut, slide the old fan off and fit the new one the same way round. Spin it by hand to check clearance before restoring power. Work involving wiring or refrigerant needs a licensed technician.
