Product details
This is a genuine Fisher & Paykel coaxial thermocouple, part number 577619, with a 600mm lead. It's the flame failure device for a gas burner, keeping the gas valve open only while it senses a flame. Longer thermocouples like this are used where the burner sits well away from its valve, so measure your old one and compare its end fittings, or check your model number and product code, before ordering 577619.
Gas burner goes out when you let go of the knob?
A coaxial thermocouple has an outer sheath with the inner conductor running down its centre. With the tip heated by the flame, it produces a small voltage that holds the safety magnet open inside the gas valve. Once the flame goes out, the magnet releases and gas stops. As the thermocouple ages, its output falls, so the burner lights while you hold the knob in but dies when you let go, or drops out after a while. Clean the tip and check its position in the flame before replacing it.

Licensed gas fitter required
Thermocouples are gas safety devices, so in Australia replacing one is work for a licensed gas fitter only. The gas and power should be isolated first. Route the lead with gentle curves and no kinks, keep it clear of hot surfaces, and position the tip exactly where the old one sat. Finish with a leak test and confirm the burner stays lit after the knob is released.
Questions about this part
Can I use a universal thermocouple instead?
Universal thermocouples can differ in tip shape, length and valve connection, and a poor fit can stop the flame failure system working properly. The genuine 577619 removes that guesswork. Ask your gas fitter to compare it with the old part.
