Product details

Part 577618 is a genuine Fisher & Paykel coaxial thermocouple, 600mm long, listed as type 106. It is the flame failure sensor that keeps the gas valve open while the burner is alight. Several similar looking lengths and types exist, so match the 600mm length, the 106 reference and the fitting at the valve end. No models are on file, so send your model number through the parts enquiry form for a check.

Burner won't stay lit after releasing the knob

A thermocouple sits in the flame and generates a tiny voltage when heated. That voltage holds a magnet in the gas valve open. If the flame goes out, the thermocouple cools and the valve shuts, stopping unburnt gas escaping. When a thermocouple weakens, the burner lights but goes out as soon as you let go of the knob, or after a few seconds. A tip that's dirty or bent out of the flame can do the same, so check its position before replacing it.

Fitting a thermocouple

Turn off the gas supply and isolate the power first. In Australia, thermocouple replacement on a gas appliance is a job for a licensed gas fitter. Route the new lead the same way as the old one, without sharp bends or contact with hot burner parts, and tighten the valve connection firmly but not hard. Check the burner stays lit and that the flame failure works.

Questions about this part

Can I use a shorter thermocouple?

No. The lead must reach from the burner to the valve along the original route. A different length or type may not fit the burner bracket or the valve, so match the 600mm length and type 106.
