The genuine Fisher & Paykel 575851 is a knob for a gas cock, the valve that controls gas to a burner. Knobs crack, lose their markings or start slipping on the valve spindle, which makes it hard to set a flame safely. Colour, finish and model fit aren't on file, so compare your old knob closely and check it for any moulded number. If there isn't one, send your model through the parts enquiry form.
Gas knob cracked, loose or slipping
A gas knob is the link between your hand and the gas valve. Pushing it in releases the safety catch and, on most cooktops, fires the igniter, then turning it sets the flame from high to simmer. If the insert that grips the spindle cracks, the knob may spin without moving the valve, come off in your hand or not push in far enough to light the burner. Faded markings make it hard to see whether the gas is fully off, which is a safety problem in itself.

Fitting the knob
Make sure every burner is off and the cooktop is cool. Pull the old knob straight up off the spindle. Line the new knob up with the flat on the spindle and press it down until it seats. Check that it pushes in and turns smoothly through every position, and that the burner lights and turns fully off.
