Oven shelves crooked or falling off the runners

Side racks are the wire frames on each side of the oven cavity. They hold the shelves at set heights and, on many ovens, have stops that keep a shelf from tipping when it's pulled out. Racks come out for cleaning and can be bent during refitting, or have their mounting points worn. A bent rack leaves shelves sloping, sticking or dropping, which makes trays slide and food cook unevenly. Rust or flaking finish after harsh cleaning is another reason to replace one.

Swapping the side rack

Let the oven cool and take the shelves out. Side racks usually lift off hooks or unclip from the cavity walls, so watch how the old one comes away before removing it. Hang the new rack in the same position, check it sits firmly, then slide each shelf in to make sure they run straight.
