The ceramic glass is the cooking surface on this cooktop. Radiant elements sit underneath and heat the pans through it, while the trim frames the edge and helps seat the glass in the bench cut-out. Glass can crack from a dropped pan, a hot spot or a heavy knock. Once it is cracked, spills can reach the elements and wiring below, so the cooktop should be switched off and left off until the top is replaced. Fitting a new ceramic glass top

Cooktops are hard-wired, so isolate the circuit at the switchboard and have a licensed electrician do the work. The cooktop normally has to come out of the bench to swap the top.
