Gas burner lights but goes out when you let go of the knob?

A thermocouple sits beside the burner flame and produces a tiny electrical current when it's heated. That current holds the gas valve's safety magnet open. If the flame goes out, the thermocouple cools, the current stops and the valve shuts off the gas. When a thermocouple fails or its tip is bent away from the flame, the burner will light while the knob is held in but goes out as soon as it's released, or it may take a long time to stay alight. Check the tip is clean and in the flame first.

Fitting a gas thermocouple

Gas work in Australia must be done by a licensed gas fitter. Isolate the gas supply and the power to the cooktop before starting. The thermocouple runs from the burner to the gas valve, so route the new 750mm lead along the same path, away from sharp edges and hot surfaces. Connect it to the valve, seat the tip correctly next to the flame, and test each burner for flame retention.

Stick to the original length and connection. A lead that's too short won't reach the valve, and extra length has to be coiled where it can be damaged. This one is 750mm with a quick connect fitting, so measure your old thermocouple before ordering.
