Washing machine not filling or water still running? Test the inlet valve
The inlet valve is an electrically operated tap at the back of the machine. When the control board powers its coil, the valve opens and lets mains water through to the drum, then snaps shut when power is removed. A coil that has failed leaves the machine sitting empty with a fill error or a slow fill. A valve that will not close properly is more serious, as water keeps trickling in even with the machine off, which can overfill the drum or leak. Cracked valve bodies and blocked inlet screens cause trouble too.

Replacing the inlet valve
Turn off both taps and unplug the washer, then disconnect the inlet hose and keep a towel handy for trapped water. Photograph the wiring and the internal hose before removing anything. Transfer the connections to the new valve exactly as they were, tighten the mounting screws, reconnect the hose with a good washer and turn the tap on slowly while you check for leaks.
