Inside a De'Longhi coffee machine, solenoid valves can route water to the brew unit, the steam wand or the drip tray depending on what you've asked for. When a coil burns out the valve stays shut, and you may get no hot water or steam, or an error and a pump that runs without delivering. When scale or a worn seal stops it closing, water drips from the spout or wand, the drip tray fills quickly, or steam leaks between drinks. Descaling regularly protects these valves, but one that's scaled solid or electrically dead needs replacing.

Fitting the solenoid valve
Unplug the machine and let it cool fully, as boiler and steam parts stay hot for some time. Empty the water tank and drip tray. Photograph the hoses, clips and wires on the old valve before removing it, and fit the new one the same way round. Use new o-rings or clips if any are worn. This is a mains voltage part, so if you're not confident, have it fitted by a qualified appliance technician.
