Product details

When a frost-free fridge starts icing up, the defrost thermostat is one of the first parts to check. 50291989007 is the genuine defrost termination thermostat for Westinghouse and Electrolux fridges, also listed as 1448818. It suits Westinghouse WSE6070SA, WSE6100PA and WSE7000SA models, WBM and WTM fridges such as the WBM4300WB and WTM3000WB, and the Electrolux ESE6077SA.

Fridge iced up at the back and not cooling

During a defrost cycle, a heater melts frost off the evaporator coil. This thermostat is fixed to the coil and closes when it's cold so the heater can run, then opens once the coil has warmed enough to end the defrost. If it fails open, the heater never comes on, frost builds into a solid block and airflow to the fridge section is choked off. The usual complaints are a warm fridge with a freezer that's still cold, a thick white coating on the freezer back panel, and water leaking after the ice finally melts.

Fitting the defrost thermostat

Unplug the fridge and pack the freezer contents into a cooler with ice bricks. Remove the panel at the back of the freezer to expose the evaporator, and let any ice melt completely. Fit the new thermostat in exactly the same spot on the coil as the old one, as its position controls when defrost ends. Make sound, insulated joins on the wires, refit the panel and give the fridge a full day before judging the result.

Questions about this part

Is 1448818 the same part?

1448818 is linked to this thermostat as a cross reference, and 50291989007 is the number to order. Match your fridge's model number against the list too, as Electrolux uses more than one defrost thermostat across its fridge ranges.
