Product details

Ice building up behind the freezer panel and the fridge going warm? Part 50284582009 is the genuine Electrolux group defrost heater, also listed as 1445347, used on frost free fridge freezers. Defrost heaters come in different lengths, shapes and wattages, and no model list or rating is on file for this one, so match either number against your old heater or send us your fridge's model number.

Frost free fridge icing up? Signs the defrost heater has failed

In a frost free fridge, the evaporator coil behind the freezer panel slowly collects frost. At regular intervals the defrost heater switches on to melt it away, and the water drains out to an evaporation tray. When the heater fails, the frost keeps building until it blocks airflow. Freezer food may still be frozen, but the fridge section warms up, the fan may sound noisy as it hits ice, and you might see a thick white layer of frost on the back panel. A continuity test across the heater terminals will confirm an open circuit.

Fitting the defrost heater

Unplug the fridge and move the food to an esky or another freezer. Remove the freezer back panel and let any ice melt naturally. Never chip at it, as a punctured evaporator ends the fridge's life. Photograph the heater clips and wiring, fit the new heater in the same position and reassemble. The fridge can take up to a day to settle back to temperature.

Questions about this part

Could it be something other than the heater?

Yes. The defrost thermostat or sensor and the control board can also stop the defrost cycle. If the heater tests open circuit on a multimeter, it's the heater. If it tests fine, have the other defrost parts checked before ordering.
