Product details

A fridge that stays dark when you open the door usually just needs a new globe. Part 50284394009 is a genuine 40W, 240V pearl globe with a bayonet cap (BC) base, listed for Westinghouse, Electrolux and Chef fridges and rangehoods. Fridge models on file include the RS643T and RS645T as well as the RS662T, RS663T and RS663V, and the globe also goes by number 1438784.

Fridge or rangehood light not working?

The globe lights up the cabinet when the door opens, controlled by a small door switch, and in a rangehood it lights the cooktop below. The pearl finish spreads the light softly rather than leaving a harsh bright spot. When the light stops working, the globe has usually blown, which you can often see as a dark or broken filament. If a new globe doesn't light, check the door switch and the lamp holder for damage. A light that stays on with the door closed can warm the fridge, so test the switch if you notice that.

Changing the globe

Unplug the appliance or switch it off at the wall, and let the old globe cool if it has just been on. Remove the light cover if there is one. Push the globe in gently and turn it anticlockwise to release the bayonet, then fit the new one by pushing and turning clockwise until it locks. Refit the cover and test. Never fit a higher wattage globe than the appliance is designed for.

Questions about this part

What does BC mean on a light globe?

BC stands for bayonet cap, the push and twist base with two side pins used on many Australian globes. It is a different fitting to a screw-in Edison base, so check your old globe's base before ordering.
