Fridge icing up and not cooling? Check the defrost heater
In a frost-free fridge the evaporator coil behind the freezer panel gathers frost as it runs. Every so often the control switches the compressor off and powers the defrost heater, which warms the coil so the ice melts and drains away. If the heater goes open circuit, frost keeps building until it chokes the airflow. Typical signs are a thick layer of ice on the back panel of the freezer, a freezer that still feels cold while the fresh food section warms up, and cooling that comes back for a while after a manual defrost. A continuity test across the heater terminals will confirm a failed element.

Replacing a fridge defrost heater
Unplug the fridge at the wall and move the food into an esky. You will usually need to remove the freezer rear panel to reach the evaporator, so let any ice melt first rather than chipping at it, as a punctured coil is a costly repair. Photograph how the heater is clipped to the coil and how the wires connect, fit the new one in the same position, then reassemble and leave the fridge to run.

Why is the freezer frosting up when the fridge is still running?
The compressor and fans can keep working after the defrost system has stopped, so the coil never clears. The heater is a common cause, but a defrost thermostat, timer or control board fault can produce the same symptoms, so test the heater before you buy.
