The drum bearing supports the back of the drum as it turns, carrying the weight of the drum and a load of wet clothes for hours at a time. As it wears, the dryer starts to squeal, squeak, grind or rumble, often worse at the start of a cycle. A badly worn bearing lets the drum drop or wobble, which can make it rub on the front or rear seals and leave marks on clothing. Catching it early saves damage to the drum, seals and belt.

Fitting the bearing kit

This is a larger job than most dryer repairs, as the drum usually has to come out. Unplug the dryer and clear the lint from inside the cabinet while it is open. Photograph each step, note how the belt is routed around the motor pulley, and keep track of screws. Check the belt and drum seals while you are in there, then spin the drum by hand before refitting the panels.
