Joining 3/8 and 5/16 inch water tube with a straight reducer
Water filter kits and fridge water lines are not always plumbed with one tube size from end to end. A filter housing might take 3/8 inch tube while the line running on to a tap or appliance is 5/16 inch, or the other way round. A straight reducer bridges that change in size without adding a bend. Replace an old connector if it weeps at either end, if the tube keeps pulling free, or if the body is cracked or discoloured. A slow drip at a fitting can ruin cabinets and flooring long before anyone spots it.

Fitting the reducer
Turn off the water supply and open a tap further down the line to release the pressure before you cut or remove any tube. Measure the outside diameter of both tubes so you know which end takes which size. Cut each tube end square and clean with a proper tube cutter, make sure each one is fully seated in the fitting, then restore the water and watch the joint for a few minutes.

How do I know if my tube is 3/8 or 5/16 inch?
Measure the outside diameter of the tube with a vernier or a fine ruler. 3/8 inch tube is about 9.5mm across and 5/16 inch tube is about 7.9mm. If your tube measures close to 6.35mm it is 1/4 inch, and this reducer is not the right one.
