Washer lid loose, dropping or not closing?

The lid hinge connects the lid to the washer's top deck and lets it pivot open and shut. A glass lid is heavier than a plastic one, so the hinge takes a fair load each time it's lifted. When the hinge cracks or its pivot wears, the lid can sit crooked, wobble, drop suddenly or fail to close fully. On many top loaders the lid must be closed for the machine to spin, so a bad hinge can also cause the washer to stop or show a lid fault.

Changing a glass lid hinge

Unplug the washer before you start. A glass lid is heavy and can break, so have someone hold it while the hinge is undone, and lay it on a towel. Note which way round the old hinge goes and where any damper or spring is located. Fit the new hinge, tighten the fixings evenly, then open and close the lid several times to check it moves smoothly and lines up.
