What the cap and bolt do in an F&P top loader
At the centre of the wash bowl, a bolt holds the agitator or wash plate on its shaft, and the cap covers that bolt so clothes can't snag on it and grime stays out of the fixing. If the cap goes missing, cracks or won't stay put, clothes catch on the exposed bolt. A bolt that's corroded or has worked loose can let the agitator or wash plate rattle or slip on the shaft. Replacing both together gives a tidy, secure fit again.

Fitting the cap and bolt
Turn the washer off at the wall first. Remove the old cap, which usually pulls or twists off, then undo the bolt. Clean around the fixing and the shaft end before fitting the new bolt, tighten it firmly without overdoing it, and press or twist the new cap into place until it sits flush. Run a short wash to check nothing rattles.
