Outdoor unit board failure on a split system
The outdoor main board drives the heavy-duty side of a split system. It runs the compressor and the outdoor fan, and on many models the reversing valve and expansion valve, while staying in contact with the indoor unit. When it fails, the indoor fan may blow room-temperature air while the outdoor unit stays silent, the system may show a communication or outdoor fault code, or the outdoor unit may trip the breaker. Storm damage and power surges are frequent causes.

Fitting the outdoor main board
This board connects to mains wiring and to the compressor drive, and capacitors on it can hold a dangerous charge after the power is off. Isolate the outdoor unit at its isolator and the switchboard, then leave it for at least 10 minutes before touching anything. Fitting should be done by a licensed air conditioning technician or electrician. Afterwards, check the outdoor unit starts and keeps running.
