In a belt-driven dryer, the motor spins a small pulley and the belt carries that drive around the outside of the drum. The tension roller presses against the belt to keep it tight so it doesn't slip. As the roller's bearing wears, it starts to squeal, chirp or grind, and the noise often grows louder as the drum picks up speed. A seized or wobbly roller lets the belt slip, so the motor hums but the drum turns slowly or not at all. You may also notice a hot rubber smell, or find the belt has jumped off completely.

Fitting the tension roller
Unplug the dryer at the wall before opening it up. Take a photo of how the belt wraps around the motor pulley and the roller, because it has to go back exactly the same way. Check the belt for cracks, glazing or fraying while it's off, and replace it as well if it's tired. Once it's all together, turn the drum by hand to make sure it spins freely and the belt tracks straight.
