Universal knobs are made to fit common control shafts across many cooking appliances, so it's a handy fix when the exact factory knob is no longer available, or when you'd rather replace one knob than a full set.
Replacing one cracked or missing cooker knob
Control knobs push onto the shaft of a gas valve, switch or thermostat and let you set the heat. They get heat, grease and cleaning sprays every day, so knobs eventually crack, the grip inside loosens, or the markings wear off. A knob that spins freely without turning the control, slips back off the shaft or has split through the middle should be replaced before the shaft gets damaged. A universal knob is a practical answer when only one has failed and the rest of the set is still fine.

Checking the shaft before you fit it
Make sure the appliance and all burners or elements are off. Pull the old knob straight off and look at the shaft, noting its shape and length. Press the new knob on firmly, lining up its pointer with the off position, then check it turns smoothly through every setting. On gas appliances, if the shaft or valve is loose or damaged, have a licensed gas fitter look at it.
