When a hotplate is stuck on full or won't heat at all, the infinite switch behind the knob is a common culprit. 4055980595 is the genuine Westinghouse infinite switch with a pilot connection, used on cooktops such as PAC516E, PAC535F, PAC619F, PCC506F, PHC364 and PHC464EG, plus the POC632A. The pilot contacts run the indicator light that shows a plate is on.
Westinghouse hotplate stuck on high or not heating
An infinite switch, also called an energy regulator or simmerstat, controls a hotplate by cycling power on and off. Turn the knob up and the plate gets power for a bigger share of each cycle, turn it down and the off periods get longer. Inside is a small bimetal strip and a set of contacts, and both wear. Signs of failure include a plate that only runs flat out, a plate that won't heat, settings that make no difference, a knob that turns loosely, or a pilot light that stays off while the plate works.

Fitting a cooktop infinite switch
Electric cooktops are normally hard wired, so in Australia this switch must be fitted by a licensed electrician. Isolate the circuit at the switchboard before the cooktop is lifted or the control panel is opened. Photograph the terminal layout on the old switch first, because the pilot and element connections need to go back exactly as they were. Test each setting once it is in.
